Essence Hanoi Hotel & Spa

This little boutique on a hectic street in the city’s frenetic old quarter is a haven in the heart of things – close to most of the main attractions yet restful, quiet and intimate. Breakfast is a treat and the hotel’s restaurant serves some of the best traditional Vietnamese cooking in the area.

Location

The hotel sits right in the centre of Hanoi’s Old Quarter – close to bar-lined Ta Hien street and a five-minute stroll from local markets and craft shops. There are myriad restaurants and tourist shops on the doorstep and the temple-dotted Hoan Kiem lake is 10-minutes’ walk away.

Style and Character

Despite the hurly-burly of the surrounding streets and the hotel’s modest size, a stay here feels restful and relaxing – thanks to a careful choice of décor (muted olives, creams and greys, luxurious beds fronted with ottomans and plenty of warm wood). Thickly glazed and draped windows shield noise from the streets and attractive mood lighting from lamps covered with Vietnamese paper lampshades adds to the intimacy.

Service and Facilities

Staff are warm and welcoming – remembering your name and always checking all is as it should be. They offer tasteful recommendations for local shops, tours and activities and respond to requests rapidly. The hotel can organise excursions in and around Hanoi. There’s also a small spa and excellent restaurant.

Rooms

Even street-facing rooms are quiet. All are decorated in soothing neutral tones and dominated by large beds covered with quality linen. There are fitted workstations and bathrooms with generous mirrors and strong showers. Most rooms have a coffee table and chairs. A handful have balconies over the street.

Food and Drink

The breakfast buffet has plenty of tropical fruits, decent barista coffee, a choice of eggs and dishes filled with Chinese dumplings, Vietnamese stir-fry, bacon, sausages and sundry cooked vegetables. The hotel restaurant offers some of the best mid-market traditional Vietnamese cooking in the Old Quarter, with tangy noodle soups and grilled fish dishes garnished with spices and tropical herbs.
